Jon Derksen

Jon Derksen, Advisor

Mr. Derksen spent his formative years in Malaysia, Japan, Canada and Bolivia.  In the nineties, he founded and contributed to Bolivian Geographic Online Magazine.  During that time he also covered a national parks beat for the Bolivian Times English newspaper.  He has contributed to editions of Backpacking and Trekking in Peru and Bolivia (Bradt Publications) and he compiled Hiking in the Garhwal Himalayas:  A Guide (Woodstock Publications).  His writing and photography have appeared in South American Explorers Magazine, Geographical, GORP, and Errant Mazazine.  Work with National Geographic and Discovery Channel has taken him from the Andean highlands to the remote Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.  His first travel memoir, Monsoon Baby, was published by Art of Adventure Publications in 2016.

Mr. Derksen has presided over the following school publications:  ARC Literary Magazine (University of British Columbia); Ekkeko Yearbook (American Cooperative School, Bolivia); The Collingwood Crier (Collingwood School, West Vancouver); The Tiger's Tale (Woodstock School, India); The COA Chronicle (Central Okanagan Academy, Kelowna); and Eculeus Yearbook (Central Okanagan Academy).

His passions include being a husband and father, teaching and leading expeditions, and protecting watershed and coastal environments.  Mr. Derksen recently completed his Masters in Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia.
