Miley Cyrus VMA's Performance: Wrecking Ball to Her Career?

Miley Cyrus’ new single ‘Wrecking Ball’ from her upcoming fourth studio album Bangerz, has received mix reviews since the video’s release on September 9th. The 20-year old singer’s stripped-down (literally), weepy, three-and a half minute escapade has since gained upwards of 99.8 million views on YouTube, and had already achieved 19.3 million views on Vevo, breaking the record for most views in twenty four hours. This record was previously held by One Direction’s summer anthem, ‘Best Song Ever’, which gained 12.3 million.

But are all these views reflective of Cyrus’ talent, or people wanting to see just how outrageous the girl can get? After watching the video and hearing the song, I believe that this is the best we’ve seen from Miley so far, and far surpasses her previous music, based on songwriting ability. The video is also quite a departure from her last video for the single, ‘We Can’t Stop’. In her most recent video we see a very vulnerable side of the girl, crying, and pleading to who we can only assume, is her on-again, off-again fiancée, Liam Hemsworth. Besides the broken-hearted, teary-eyed angst, there is also the more controversial side of the video, where we see a nude Cyrus riding a wrecking ball, as well as her attempting to make-out with a hammer. Although this is arguably low on the scale of outlandish things that celebrities have done, she is still receiving more backlash than praise. With her twerking performance at the VMA’s, and the foam-finger rub-down she gave Robin Thicke that borderlined on sexual assault, people are less interested in her music, and more interested in what headlines they can get out of her behaviour.

It’s been said that any publicity is good publicity, so it’s safe to say that even though when googling Miley Cyrus’ name, more than half of the links shown are publicly bashing her, she is still doing very well. As long as the hits keep coming, it seems like Miley couldn’t care less what you think of her. Although she may not exactly be role-model material, her dedication to her own ideas, and her willful ignorance towards negativity are admirable, and both are ideals that today’s young generation would benefit greatly from adopting into their own lifestyle. And as far as Miley goes, whether you like her or not, the girl sure knows how to entertain.
