The Enigma that is Wednesday Addams

In October of 2020, Wednesday was announced as an unnamed Addams Family project being helmed by Tim Burton. The series’s production would be handled by MGM Television, with Burton as director.

This gained some attention, as the Addams Family has been popular for quite some time. As the spotlightstarted to grow around this project, it was announced in May of 2021 that y Jenna Ortega would be playing Wednesday. Ortega is quite popular with Gen-Z audiences, so this project was going to appeal to all audiences since Addams Family is quite the classic. However, I don’t think any announcements or teasers could prepare us for when the project officially came out on Netflix on November 23rd, 2022.

This series instantly became popular and took over many social media platforms such as Instagram, Tiktok, and Twitter. Ortega was getting praise left and right for her acting skills and, in general, her aura as soon as the camera was rolling. Being only 20 years old, many people were very impressed with her ability to portray the character. To the delight of many viewers, the fourth episode included an unexpected dance number, which saw Wednesday perform a strange routine to the song “Go Goo Muck” by The Cramps.

Now the devil might work hard, but Netflix works harder, as  it only took the internet a few days to discover the genius of Ortega’s moves

According to Ortega, she came up with the now-famous routine on her own. In an interview with Watching Netflix, Ortega and her co-stars reacted to the scene. “I actually felt really insecure about this,” she admitted. “I choreographed that myself and I think it’s very obvious that I’m not a dancer or choreographer.” Despite Ortega’s worries, her co-stars chimed in to call the scene “amazing,” and “fantastic.” And it wasn’t only Ortega’s moves that had fans going wild- this amazing dance feature has The Cramps climbing high on music charts.

The interenet obviously agrees;this dance has become a cultural phenomenon in its own right. Fans of the show are now posting their own renditions of Wednesday’s quirky moves on TikTok.People couldn’t help but get flashbacks to Stranger Things 4 when the song “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush went viral due to its emotional connection to the film and specific scene.  Is Netflix getting repetitive withits themes? Possibly, but they absolutely outdid themselves with Wednesday

All in all, Wednesdayt was a perfect modern-day take on the classic film series without tainting the original work. Ortega’s acting and demeanor made audiences feel enticed and intrigued after the very first episode.. Wednesday is definitely recommended to anyone and will for sure be added to your binge list!
