The Power of the Pack

Walt Mudie, Writer

The pack may not be for everyone now, but it soon will be.

In our world new trends are so quick to dominate. The Internet makes it so easy to communicate and discover what everyone else is doing. A natural instinct for many people is to fit in, so they follow suit when a new idea pops up. That’s exactly how the latest fashion statement is growing so quickly.

Wearing clothes that would’ve been considered trendy over 20 years ago seems to be the newest thing to do. So let’s go back to the 1990s. From high waisted jeans to crop tops, from overalls to chokers, if you look around today, the 90s clothing influence is so clear to see. Many students enjoy wearing Champion or Tommy Hilfiger, both staples in the 90s. So it’s really no surprise that one of the final cornerstones of 90s fashion is finally making its return.

Fanny packs. The newest trend is fanny packs. That’s a sentence no one thought they’d hear again, but it’s reality.

It may not seem like it yet as looking around you don’t see many people putting “belt bags” on top of their priorities regarding apparel. That can be expected with any older fashion trends making a return. People who were around for the first wave of fanny pack popularity have a fair reason to dislike their return. 20 years ago many of these people got sick of the fanny pack thanks to high concentration.

The difference is the fact that people wearing fanny packs these days weren’t around for the first fanny pack era. Because of that, they have nothing negative associated with fanny packs. That makes it so much easier for these people to wear them.

Whether it’s Kendall Jenner or Billie Eilish, many celebrities have been captured wearing fanny packs. A lot of trends have been started by celebrities making a single fashion decision that changes the whole game. That’s what’s happening here.

This trend may not last long, but despite the length, this further proves how history repeats itself. There’s no reason why this trend won’t resurface in 20 more years, around 2040. It’s even possible that this trend could be the beginning of a never ending fashion loop with 90s fashion on top of the ladder every 20 years.

Be sure to stay on the lookout for fanny packs, and don’t be afraid to join in!
