It came as a surprise to many, but fans of Harry Potter and its world of witches and wizardry will be delighted that J.K. Rowling is back into her time-honored franchise, this time taking over the screenwriting, a task which she has not yet done before.

According to many sources, most notably the UK Telegraph, the film, a spinoff known as “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”, was just announced Thursday, September 12, as a screenplay about the textbook of the same name given to Hogwarts students, and its fictitious author, Newt Scamander. However, according to further information divulged, this movie will not be taking place in the environment we are familiar with. J.K. Rowling has stated that it will be set 70 years before Harry even came around, and that, instead of the iconic school, it will be set in New York.

According to Rowling’s Twitter page, the idea for the movie “All started when Warner Bros came to me with the suggestion of turning Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them into a film.” She admitted it was a fun idea, but also stated she would be doing the writing then, as “The idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of Fantastic Beasts, realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt.”

She then went on to state that, far from being a one-shot movie, it will be an all-new series of movies, which leads to the possibility of characters the fans are familiar with, such as Dumbledore, Hagrid, and even Harry’s parents, to be introduced later on. Now that’s worth seeing! The known factors together have been well-received by many “Potterheads” as the fan base is known, but the setting and lack of characters we all know could be a disappointing combination for the film’s release.
