Moncton, a city in New Brunswick, Canada, has introduced a new recycling system called Eco360. So far, the system has proven to be a growing success.

Thanks to Southeast New Brunswick Solid Waste Commission’s 3-bag recycling proposition, there has been a 35 per cent increase in recyclable material, as well as a significant increase in revenue. Their waste diversion coordinator, Gena Alderson says, “On average per year we make about $1 million off our recyclable here, so over the year that’s about $700,000 extra”. The extra income is now being given back to the community.

When garbage is decomposed, a mixture of a liquid called leachate and a gas composed mostly of methane is created. The liquid is treated right away, but the gas is converted into CO2 and is burnt. Mechanical engineer, Sebastian Hultberg, at Eco360 explains, “Instead of flaring it up, burning it off, we’re putting it through a generator, which will produce about one megawatt of power and it’s going to meet all our needs on site and an additional 300 homes.”

The Eco360 generator costs $3.7 million to build and $300,000 to operate per year. The Southeast New Brunswick Solid Waste Commission will intake about an extra $800,000 a year from the generator’s one megawatt of power that will be sold to New Brunswick Power.

Soon, Eco360 will introduce a mobile ecology depot system to give people who wish to recycle materials that are “harder for people to get rid of at the curb”. “We want to make sure you do the right thing in disposing of your waste” says Alderson. This system will be directed at more rural areas – the people who have to drive an hour to an hour and a half to reach Eco360’s recycling facility. They are also planning on building a new generator a couple hundred meters away from the facility. The generator should be ready for use by early fall.
