Pee -The New Solution to the Energy Crisis?

Pee -The New Solution to the Energy Crisis?

In a growingly environmentally concerned world we are always looking for a new way to get renewable energy. But four teenagers from Nigeria may have found one of the most unique solutions to the demand for energy: urine.

Fifteen year old Bello Eniola and fourteen year olds Faleke Oluwatoyin, Duro-Aina Adebola, and Akindele Abiola have developed a generator powered by human pee. The generator works by separating out the hydrogen from the waste. The hydrogen is then purified, and pushed through several cylinders and into the generator, where it can be used to provide power. The innovation can turn just one liter of urine into six hours of power, and could prove tremendously helpful to people in remote locations, or who do not have access to a power grid.

The idea of turning urine into energy has been theorized before, but this is the first real-world application of the theory. In time, this technology and other inventions like it could help provide power to the approximately 1.3 billion people worldwide without access to it.The girls displayed their innovation at Maker Faire Africa, and have since received global attention. Though the device is still only a prototype, and has several hoops to get through before it will be available for a worldwide market, it is a promising step forward on the marathon towards clean, renewable energy for all.

If this is what these girls are accomplishing at such a young age, it’s safe to say we will likely be seeing more from them in the future.
