First off we should talk about the things people do to get their fill of being scared. We scare ourselves in a lot of different ways, some people like scary movies, stories and amusement parks, while some enjoy the experience of partaking in activities that are potentially dangerous to their physical safety such as extreme sports or endurance tests. No matter what the way people get their fill of being scared, they do it for a few specific reasons.
Some people enjoy being scared because of their busy lifestyle. Our everyday lives tend to be repetitive, stressful and fast paced. Some people feel bored with their everyday lives. So when we are scared, we are totally in the moment and do not think about being stressed or what we have to get done. For some other people, being scared is a good way to release coped up feelings. The adrenaline while watching a scary movie, or creeping through a haunted house is thrilling because there’s always the comforting thought that “This is not real” or “it’s all pretend” and your brain recognizes that it isn’t an actual threat.
According to Buzz Feed, when you are scared, your brain releases “dopamine” or endorphins that controls the pleasure center in your brain. Scary fanatics who’ve seen every horror movie out there may have no limit on how much dopamine is released. Those people who like thrilling experiences like sky diving get a bigger kick of dopamine than others; there are lots of people who absolutely hate being scared. Mostly it all depends on your personality. It could depend on your childhood if you were scared by something as a child (such as a “ghost”, a person under a blanket maybe) your brain doesn’t recognize if it’s actually “real” or just “pretend”. So in the future they may be more sensitive and not enjoy ghosts. After a while, your brain could stop releasing those chemicals and you’ll need to amp up adventures if you want to get a better ‘scare high’ let’s say. So whether it’s sky diving in general or sky diving into a tank full of sharks, it all depends on your mind and how much you really want to get scared.
Just remember that watching a scary movie or going on a scary roller coaster is all in fun. If you realize that there’s no real threat, you may end up enjoying yourselves instead of closing your eyes and cowering into a pillow. But for some of you maybe being scared just isn’t not your thing, in that case you can always watch a good rom-com.
